Sort laundry before starting the machine

Care labels, colours and fabric requirements turn a full basket into suitable wash loads.

A full laundry basket is not necessarily a suitable machine load. Its contents may tolerate different temperatures, programmes and handling. Before buying extra sorting baskets, establish a clear routine beside the machine. Start with care labels and finish with a load whose individual items can actually be washed together under the same conditions.

Read labels before grouping colours

First remove anything not intended for machine washing or requiring special treatment. The care label matters more than an impression that the fabric looks sturdy. A similar colour does not automatically mean two garments belong in the same washing programme.

Miele identifies colours and care-label symbols as the basis for sorting. Find a reliable explanation for unfamiliar symbols rather than guessing a programme. A stated maximum washing temperature is also not an instruction to use that exact temperature for every wash.

Build compatible groups

Separate light and dark groups sensibly and follow instructions about washing particular colours separately. New, strongly coloured items deserve particular attention. Also group according to permitted programmes and which textiles should be processed together. Your machine manual explains the intended programmes and their loading limits.

A sorting system with numerous compartments helps little if none produces a suitable load when you need it. In a small household, a few broad groups followed by a final check before washing may be simpler. Remove delicate or particularly soiled pieces for separate consideration at that point.

Check pockets and fastenings

Empty pockets and look for tissues, coins or other loose objects. Prepare fastenings, detachable parts and the garments themselves according to clothing and machine instructions. Use a laundry bag for small pieces only where suitable for the material and programme. A bag does not replace checking the fabric’s requirements.

Size the load for its programme

Follow the permitted load for the programme you select. The machine’s maximum capacity does not necessarily apply to every programme. Do not simply press in the remaining basket contents. Plan the following step too: which items permit tumble drying, which need a hanger and which require a flat drying surface?

Before you buy

  • Compare care labels before combining items.
  • Account for colours and permitted programmes.
  • Inspect pockets and garment details.
  • Plan programme loading and suitable drying.

Useful sorting follows actual care requirements. A simple, consistent process is more valuable than the largest possible collection of labelled baskets.
