Desk lamps: aim the light at the task

Compare reach, adjustment and controls where you actually read, write or draw.

An illuminated lamp on a desk

A desk lamp should illuminate the area where you work. A striking housing and a large number on the packaging do not establish whether it does that well. Start with the positions of your screen, notebook and materials. You can then judge the movement range and space that make sense for the lamp on your desk.

Identify the task on the desk

Place an open book or your usual paper in its normal position. Check where a lamp can stand without occupying the working area. While writing, aim to keep your hand from casting an inconvenient shadow across the current line; try the position according to which hand you use. If you alternate between screen and paper, assess both surfaces. A lamp that reaches only the keyboard may contribute little to reading beside it.

Compare reach rather than joint count

An arm with numerous joints helps only if it reaches the required area and holds its chosen position. Compare projection, height and movement direction with your desk layout. A broad base needs space; a clamp requires a suitable desk edge and an approved top thickness. Read the fitting instructions rather than assuming a clamp suits any edge. On a height-adjustable desk, the planned cable route must also accommodate the intended movement.

Assess the lighting in the room

Notice whether your normal seated position gives a direct view of an uncomfortably bright light source. An adjustable lamp may reflect in the monitor; change its position and angle and inspect the screen again. Dimming steps help when you actually use them to suit the room. Colour-temperature selection is a personal operating preference rather than a substitute for appropriate positioning. Compare the effect under similar conditions where possible instead of relying on different promotional photographs.

Read about controls and replacement options

The switch should remain accessible without reaching across drinks or paperwork. Check whether the lamp remembers its previous setting if that matters to you. For replaceable bulbs, follow the explicitly permitted types; for integrated light sources, examine repair and replacement arrangements. Also read the instructions for positioning and operation. Additional charging sockets add value only when you need them at the lamp’s actual location rather than elsewhere in the room.

Before you buy

  • Lay out paper and screen in their normal positions.
  • Match arm reach or clamp dimensions to the desk.
  • Check shadows, direct light visibility and reflections.
  • Consider accessible controls and replacement options.

A useful desk lamp brings adjustable light to your actual working area. Reach, position and straightforward controls matter more than a lengthy feature list.
